Most retail jobs are easy to come by. Go online or pick up any newspaper and you will find available positions in retail. Many of these jobs are hourly wage positions within a store such as in a clothing store or grocery store. Retail includes a number of services, everything from automotive, electronics, appliances, foods and beverages, department stores, and other general merchandise. Retail jobs can be varied and there is usually room for quick promotions and advancements within a business.

Retail jobs are known for their high turn-over rate. It is common in most hourly-wage positions. Retail jobs can be permanent or seasonal. Seasonal jobs, such as holidays like Christmas and New Years, are often the busiest time of the year for retailers. Thus, more help is often needed.

Retail managers and other higher-level positions can have decent salaries plus benefits. There are also financial bonuses that are awarded depending on how successful a retail establishment is. The industry is highly susceptible to the highs and lows of the economy, though, so anyone interested in the field needs to be aware of that.

Qualifications for retail jobs vary depending on the desired position. Entry-level jobs such as at a retail store require little to no retail experience. Sometimes the employee might still be in high school or college. Personal image can be important in getting a retail job and can vary depending on the type of business. Upscale clothing stores and department stores require a clean-cut, professional look. Other stores may only require jeans and a company shirt.

Upper management jobs in the retail industry might require a college degree in business and marketing. Anyone seeking a supervisory position or merchandising position will need a degree plus a few years experience in the field.

Anyone interested in a retail job needs to have good communication skills and good customer relation skills. Retail does not succeed if the customer does not buy the product so customer satisfaction is key.

Retail Operations – These are the jobs within a retail store such as sales people, floor workers, managers, supervisors, shipping and receiving, and any other position that involves the running of a store. Most of these jobs are entry-level or easy to obtain.

Merchandising – Merchandising involves the advertising, sales, and distribution of products to other businesses, organizations, and individuals.  Merchandisers are responsible for raising awareness of a product and getting it into the retail stores.

Information Systems – Information systems in retail involve the application of computer software into the industry. These systems are responsible for keeping up with customer information, sales data, analysis, and operations software. Information systems have been a growing part of the retail industry as companies use computers to try to predict future markets.

Customer Service – Customer service is important in any business or industry. They are responsible for providing information and services to customers, either before or after a purchase. One of the goals of customer service representatives is to leave a positive impression on customers so that they might be repeat customers and tell other customers about their experience.
